GALWAD

October 2022 // GALWAD - A story from our future, Collective Cymru, UNBOXED, Creative Wales

Rees as part of Collective Cymru was lead conceptor/curator for Wales’ home nation project as part of UNBOXED, Creativity in the UK. GALWAD was the festival’s culminating event and a multi-platform story for our times. Unfolding on social media channels in real-time over seven days in autumn 2022, and broadcast live on Sky TV on Sunday 2nd October, it asked what if the future made contact with us in the present.

Conceived as a new kind of tri-lingual, real-time storytelling, GALWAD broke new ground in distributing the characters and plot of the story across over a hundred pieces of content; immersing the viewer in the action through single-shot cinematography; threading BSL, Welsh and English through the script and performances and working across theatre, film and TV sectors to deliver the ambitious creative vision live from Wales to the world.

The spectacular finale from Blaenau Festiniog, North Wales

Imagine if the next big names in writing, acting, theatre and production in Wales are out there, watching and inspired to take part… Maybe, just maybe, now is the time for theatre in Wales to throw up its arms and take that dive into the unknown… This could be the start of something
