As part of Collective Cymru, Rees was lead conceptor and curator for Wales’ home-nation commission for UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK. Its culminating event, GALWAD, was an ambitious multi-platform story for our times. Unfolding in real time across social media over seven days in autumn 2022—and culminating in a live broadcast on Sky Arts on Sunday 2 October—it posed a provocative question: What if the future made contact with us in the present?

Conceived as a new form of trilingual, real-time storytelling, GALWAD broke new ground by distributing its characters and narrative across more than 100 pieces of content. Single-shot cinematography immersed audiences directly in the action, while BSL, Welsh and English were woven throughout the script and performances. Bringing together artists and practitioners from theatre, film and television, the project delivered its audacious creative vision live from Wales to the world.
